What is Computer RAM (Random Access Memory)


Random Access Memory (RAM) is a form of computer data storage. Nowadays, it has taken a form of integrated circuits that allows the stored data to be accessed randomly.
What is computer RAM? The term random in RAM refers to the fact that any piece of data can be returned in a constant time, irrespective of its physical location and whether it is related to the previous piece of data. RAM helps in accessing any byte of memory without touching preceding bytes. The word RAM is synonymous with the main memory and is reserved for computer related programs.

On the other hand, read-only memory (ROM) refers to computer memory which is used to store programs that boot the computer and perform diagnostics. Most of the computers have a small amount of ROM - around a few thousand bytes.

Random access memory is volatile, i.e. it requires a steady flow of electricity to maintain its contents and as soon as the power goes off, whatever data that was in the RAM is lost. RAM is commonly known as read/write memory and ROM as read-only memory. It is the most common type of memory found in computers and also other devices like printers.

History

During 1949 to 1952, the magnetic core memory was widely used as a writable random access memory. It was subsequently used in most computers, until the development of the static and dynamic integrated RAM circuits in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Before RAM, computers used delay line memory, relays and different kinds of vacuum tube arrangements to implement main memory functions, which were a few hundreds or thousands of bits. Latches built out of vacuum tube triodes and discrete transistors were used for smaller and faster memories such as registers and random access register banks. Before integrated ROM circuits were developed, random access memory was constructed using semiconductor diode matrices which were driven by address decoders.

How does RAM Works?

Like any other memory chip, RAM is made up of millions of transistors and capacitors. A transistor and a capacitor are paired to create a memory cell, which represents a single bit of data. The capacitor holds the bit information as 0 or 1 and the transistor acts as a switch which allows the control circuitry on the memory chip to read the status of the capacitor or change its state. The capacitor is like a small bucket that stores electrons. To store 1 in the memory cell, the bucket is filled with electrons, and to store 0 it is emptied. The problem with the capacitor's bucket is that it leaks and within few milliseconds the full bucket becomes empty. Therefore, either the CPU or the memory controller has to recharge all capacitors holding 1 before they discharge. For this, the memory controller reads the memory and then writes it right back. This refresh operation occurs automatically nearly thousands of times per second.

Types of RAM

There are mainly two basic types of RAM:
  • Dynamic RAM (DRAM): DRAM has to be constantly refreshed by the memory controller, as the capacitors that hold the information or data have a built-in leak, which can only be stopped by refreshing the information. This makes DRAM slower and cumbersome.
  • Static RAM (SRAM): As compared to DRAM, the storage capacity of SRAM is greater, as it uses on-off switches instead of capacitors. Therefore, SRAM is more expensive, faster and can hold more information.
Both SRAM and DRAM are volatile in nature. Usually, advanced versions of the dynamic RAM are used. These include FPM (fast page mode), ECC (error correcting code), EDO (extended data output) and SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM).

Random Access Memory could be considered as an array of boxes, where each box holds a single byte of information. A computer having one megabyte of memory can hold up to one million bytes or characters of information. The speed of RAM is measured in nanoseconds (ns). Lesser the nanoseconds, faster the speed of the computer.

What is Virtual Memory


Virtual memory acts as a supplement to RAM and forms a part of RAM and disk. It gives the computer user a feeling that he has RAM of unlimited capacity while the application program is under the impression that it has an unfragmented working memory.
Virtual memory has become very common for most operating systems of desktop computers available. Computers these days have 64MB or 128MB of RAM space available for CPU operations. Considering the huge demands placed by computer users on the application programs, this space is not sufficient. Also users expect all these programs to run simultaneously which is not possible with the available space. Hence the need for virtual memory.

What is Virtual Memory?
Virtual memory is a technique which tricks an application program into believing that it has a contiguous address space and unlimited working memory. While the fact is the memory may be physically fragmented or extended on to disk storage. Systems that use virtual memory are capable of executing large applications at a fast rate and use real physical memory more efficiently than those without virtual memory. Virtual memory is different from the concept of memory virtualization.

Working of a Virtual Memory
Virtual memory is an intelligent method of utilizing the computer's actual memory capacity and manipulating it using a combination of the operating system and memory hardware capabilities. It acts as a temporary storage medium in which data is stored in a file format. Since the operating system acts as the determinant, it provides quick access to the data and allows smoother operating capacity. Virtual memory works with co-ordination with RAM by storing and presenting data quickly to serve the requirements of an application program. Secondary storage device like hard disk has a large storage capacity but it provides a very slow access to the data.

How Virtual Memory is Organized?
Virtual memory is organized by either paging or segmentation. Most of the systems use page tables to translate the virtual addresses seen by application programs into physical addresses used by the processor to execute instructions. Page table maintains entries for mapping a virtual address to physical address. Systems may have a single page table for the entire system or an individual page table for every application program. Thus paging can be defined as the process of moving inactive virtual memory pages to disk and restoring them to real memory upon request. There are various algorithms to select which pages should be moved to hard disk and which should be retained.

Very few systems use the concept of segmentation for implementing virtual memory. In segmentation memory is divided in variable size segments. Segment number and an offset within the segment together form a virtual address. If a processor wants a particular data item it first looks up for its segment number in a segment table to find a segment descriptor. Segment descriptor gives information whether the offset within the segment is less than the length of the segment and if it isn't an interrupt is generated to notify that the segment is found. If the processor is unable to find the segment in the main memory it generates a hardware interrupt prompting the operating system to swap in the segment. The operating system then searches for the segments that were not in use for a long time and swaps them out of main memory in order to make space for the new segments to be read in.

How to Increase Virtual Memory?
Here is a step by step instruction set to increase the virtual memory of your computer. (For Windows XP):
  • Click the menu start, then click control panel
  • Select performance and maintenance, under that click system
  • Click settings on the advanced tab under performance
  • On the advanced tab under virtual memory, click change
  • Under rrive [volume label], select the drive that contains the paging file that you wish to change
  • Under paging file size for selected drive, click on the check box, custom size
  • You can choose the amount of memory you wish to reserve for virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size
  • Click set
  • Restart the computer when prompted
If you find your computer running slow then increasing virtual memory won't help, it might be just the result of ' thrashing'. Shuffling blocks of virtual memory between real memory and disks consumes most of computer's time, thus causing thrashing. Though well-designed application programs may help to solve this problem to a certain extent, the ultimate cure is to install more real memory.

What is Processor Cache


Processor cache is a piece of memory which allows a very high access rate and speeds up computation. It stores the data items that are frequently required by the processor, so that every time there is a demand for that data, the processor does not have to access the main memory.
Main memory is a computer device with the slowest access rate. If the CPU needs a data item, a request is sent to the main memory via a memory bus. The main memory then searches for the data item and sends it back to the CPU. Lot of time is wasted in this entire cycle. What if the data item were stored somewhere close to the CPU? The working of processor cache is based on a similar concept. To understand the concept of cache memory, we will take an example of a library throughout this article.

Suppose, we have a library, with a single librarian. If a person comes and asks for Harry Potter Part I, then the librarian goes to the bookshelf and retrieves the book and gives it to the person. When the person is done with the book, it is restored to the shelf. If, any other person comes and asks for the same book, the cycle is repeated again. This is exactly how a system works without a cache memory.

Why do we need processor cache?

Now, let's see what happens in the presence of a cache memory. In our library example, let's consider a drawer at the librarian's desk as a cache. The procedure remains the same, when the first person places a request for a book. But, when the book is returned, the librarian does not store it on the shelf, instead keeps it in her drawer. Now, when the next person comes and places a request for the same book, the librarian simply has to retrieve it from her drawer. In a similar way, cache memory stores the data items that are frequently required by the processor. Thus, every time, the data is requested, processor simply looks in the cache and retrieves it, saving a long trip to the main memory.

Does cache memory store only the frequently used data items?

No, cache memory is a smart piece of memory that also looks for the data that is likely to be requested in the near future. Continuing with our library example; when the person requests for Harry Potter Part I, our intelligent librarian also fetches Harry Potter Part II along with it. Now, when the person is done with the first book, it is very likely that he might ask for the second part. And when he does, librarian has it ready in her drawer. Similarly, when the cache memory fetches data items from the main memory, it also fetches the items that are located at the addresses near the requested items. These adjacently located chunks of data which are transferred to the cache is called as the cache line.

Two-level processor cache

Most hard drives and other components make use of a single-level cache. But a processor cache is a two-level cache, in which level 1 cache (L1) is smaller and faster; while level 2 cache (L2) is slightly slower, but anytime faster than the main memory. L1 cache is divided into two parts viz., instruction cache and data cache. Instruction cache stores the set of instructions that are required by the CPU for computing; while the data cache stores the values that are required for current execution. L2 cache is responsible for loading the data from the main memory. Again, coming back to our library example, consider a librarian's drawer as L1 cache. On any busy day, when the demand for books is high and the librarian has already stored many books in her drawer, chances are that it might get full pretty quickly. This is where L2 cache comes into the picture. Consider a bookcase near the librarian's desk as L2 cache. When the drawer fills up, the librarian starts storing the books in the bookcase. Now, whenever there is a demand for some popular book, the librarian first looks in her drawer; if the book is not found there, she searches it in the bookcase. Similarly, when L1 cache is full, data is stored in L2 cache. The processor first looks for the data in L1 cache, and if it is not found, then only L2 is searched. If the data is not found in L2 as well, a trip to main memory is inevitable.

Is implementing more cache a good idea?

Yes and no, as implementing more cache will let you fetch data quickly, only in the cases, when the data is available in either L1 or L2. Coming back to our library example. If a person requests a popular book, which is not stored in the librarian's drawer or the bookcase; she first looks for it in the drawer and then in the bookcase. This way, lot of time is wasted before she finally retrieves it from the bookshelf. Similarly, the processor checks first in L1 and then, in L2, and when the item is not found in either cache, then only sends a request to the main memory. As you must have realized, lot of processor time is wasted, in looking for the item in the two cache memories. When the processor finds the required data item in any of the cache memories, 'cache hit' is said to have occurred; on other occasions, a 'cache miss' takes place.

One might think that if cache memory is so fast, why not implement it large enough so as to store entire data of the main memory in it? The reason, is that, although cache memory offers fast access, the speed comes at a great expense. Hence, proper utilization of the available cache memory is must. Data items are periodically updated and replaced using various algorithms.

In 2005, Google acquired 'Android' a little known cell phone software company. In Nov 2007, it was announced that they were developing a mobile device.
Although on the cards for a while before, Apple caused a sensation with the release of its iPhone, and later, in early 2010 its iPad, with its convenient finger touch interface and the technological world has been in a buzz of excited development, to keep up with, and try and improve on this device.

Because of the limits and restrictions on outside software for use in the Apple iPad operating system, the newer Android operating system is rapidly catching up in popularity. They are very handy pieces of equipment to have, but you should always buy the warrantee on them because you never know what might happen. Desktops do not get damaged very easily because they are not being transported everywhere with you.

It is possible to have a stationary computer and a portable one. It actually might be a good idea. You can store your files on the desktop and back it up because it will hold a lot more memory than your laptop and then you can just use your laptop for your current projects and assignments. It is also less of a hassle to use the stationary one while you are at home so that you do not have to get out the charger and worry about the computer running out of battery. There are advantages to both but if you do not want to deal with the desktop if you travel a lot, move a lot, or find it to be a nuisance to upkeep, a laptop will work just find. Just remember to back up your files.

The more pixels used to represent an image, the closer the result can resemble the original. The number of pixels in an image is sometimes called the resolution, though resolution has a more specific definition. Pixel counts can be expressed as a single number, as in a "three-megapixel" digital camera, which has a nominal three million pixels, or as a pair of numbers, as in a "640 by 480 display", which has 640 pixels from side to side and 480 from top to bottom (as in a VGA display), and therefore has a total number of 640 × 480 = 307,200 pixels or 0.3 megapixels.

When looking at the sales blurb for digital cameras, you will see endless mention of megapixels - and this is indeed a critical feature of your camera. So here we'll explain what they are - and how many you'll need.

A digital camera contains a special device, know as a sensor (sometimes referred to as the CCD), to capture light. This replaces the photographic film used in a traditional camera. The sensor is comprised of numerous tiny 'photosites' that collect light, convert it into an electric form and feed it to the camera's on-board computer. Once the digital information is stored in your camera's memory, it can be reassembled on a computer monitor, on your camera's colour screen, or printer to make your photo. A pixel (from the term 'picture element') is a tiny, discreet location on the sensor that contains the photosite, a micro lens to focus light onto the photosite and other electronics. The number of megapixels refers to how many millions of pixels the sensor in your camera has. A megapixel is the common term for one million pixels, often abbreviated as 'IMP'. A two-million pixel camera will be referred to as 2MP, and so on.

The number of pixels is important because the more a camera has, the more detail it can capture - and the higher its resolution is said to be. Additionally, the more pixels there are, the larger you'll be able to print your pictures. But don't forget, the more megapixels a camera has, the more expensive it will be too.

So how many megapixels should you get when you buy a digital camera? The answer to this depends largely on your budget and what you want to do with your images. You need fewer pixels to post images. You need fewer pixels to post images on the internet and send them as emails, than to print standard 6x4 inch prints. But you'll need more pixels than that if you want to create enlargements. For example, you will get perfectly good 6x4 inch prints from a 2MP digital camera and still be able to enlarge the shot to a print size of around 8x10 inches. With 3MP cameras, you'll be able to enlarge your photos up to a full A4 sheet.

If you buy a digital camera with more than 4MP, then you'll be able to print at sizes up to A3 and even larger. So while a less expensive low-resolution camera might look like a bargain at first, if you want to create large prints then it's not the camera for you. Happily, all digital cameras can be set up to use less than their full complement of pixels, so you can tailor shots to their end use, such as the lesser number of pixels needed on an image to be emailed. This is even true with a very high-resolution model.

Another thing to remember is that the more pixels your camera has, the more memory the shots will use up - per photo - because each image will then be made up from more pixels and so contain more digital information.

6. Do not forward any suspicious email. If it does contain, or point to, a virus, you're simply helping to spread it. Also, don't reply to the email asking if it's them, since it may not actually go to that person if it's spam.
7. Avoid sending your personal information or filling out forms in an email.
